Keep was part of a Norman castle built in the 1300's of which only the Keep remains.
In the 15th century the Keep came into the possession of the
ancestoral rulers of Inishowen. |
In 1588 the Keep housed soldiers of the Spanish Armada who had been shipwrecked aboard the La Trinidad Valenceria in Kinnegoe Bay. They were rescued by Sean Óg O'Doherty who, with Red Hugh O'Donnell, was subsequently imprisoned in Dublin Castle.
In 1608 Cahir O'Doherty, Sean Og's son, lead a Rising against the English Garrison in Derry and the Keep was burned in reprisal. Inishowen, including the Keep, was then granted to Sir Arthur Chichester who leased it to fellow Englishman, Henry Vaughan. The Keep was repaired and the Vaughan family lived there until 1718 when they built the nearby manor house.
It is believed that Wolfe Tone, a leader of the 1798 Rising, was imprisoned in O'Doherty's Keep after his capture in Lough Swilly aboard a French Frigate before being taken to Derry Gaol.

|Bhí Daingean Uí Dhochartaigh ina pháirt de chaisleán Normannach a tógadh sna 1300 ach níl ach an daingean fágtha anois. Sa chúigiú haois déag ghlac Clann Uí Dhochartaigh, ceannairi sinseartha Inis Eoghain, seilbh ar an daingean... I 1588 fuair saighdúirí ó Armada na Spáinne dídean sa daingean nuair a tharla longbhriseadh dóibh agus iad ar bhord an La Trinidad Valenceria i gcuan Kinnegoe. Shábháil Sean Óg Ó Dochartaigh iad. Ina dhiadh sin cuireadh é fhéin agus Aodh Rua Domhnaill i bpriosún i gCaisleán Bhaile Átha Cliath. Bhi mac le Sean Óg, Cahir Ó Dochartaigh ina cheann urraidh ar an Éirí Amach na bliana 1608 agus dhóigh an garastún Sasanach ó Dhoire an Daingean mar dhíoltas. Tugadh Inis Eoghain, comh maith leis an Daingean, don Uasal Arthur Chichester agus thug seisean ar léas é dona chomhghleacaí, Henry Vaughan. Cuireadh deis ar an daingean agus bhí conaí ar chlann Vaughan ann go dtí 1718 nuair a thóg siad an mainéar atá giota beag ar shiúl ón daingean. Deirtear go raibh Wolfe Tone, a bhí ina cheannaire ar an t-Éirí amach i 1798, faoi ghlas i ndaingean Uí Dhochartaigh sular aistriú é go Priosún Dhoire. Gabháileadh é i Loch Suilí agus é ar bhord Frigéad Franncach. ©|
