Euro Iompu Teo Closes in Gweedore Sixty-two jobs will be lost on the Gweedore Industrial Estate with the closure of Euro Iompu Teo, a coach building company. The company went into examinership in 2008. Deputy Dinny McGinley and Senator Brian O'Domhnaill have called on Údarás na Gaeltachta to attract new employment to the area but the CEO of Údaras na Gaeltachta, Padraig O'hAaonlain, has responded that this is a difficult task given the current economic climate. Rapid Rise in Inishowen Burglaries Buncrana Mayor, Dermot McLaughlin, met with Inishowen's Gardaí Superintendent, Paul Glynn, to discuss crime after it was revealed that 38, so called 'creeper burglaries', have taken place in the peninsula since January. Warning people to be vigilant Superintendent Glynn said: 'We would advise everyone to be on their guard and look out for any suspicious activity in their area. Look out for vehicles in the area that wouldn't normally be there - because it may be burglars planning their attacks for the night time. Always lock external doors, back and front, because that is how they are getting in'. The burglaries are taking place when people are in their homes and he advised people to lock their doors at night. The Gardaí also advised people to look out for their neighbours, especially elderly residents and 'call in on them and make sure they are alright'. Packie for the EU Parliament? There are suggestions from within the Fianna Fáil Party that Irish goalie, Packie Bonner, will stand for the party in the North-West in June's European elections. The Party's flagging popularity has left it trailing both Fine Gael and Labour in the opinion polls with only 22% of respondents saying they still supported the Government. Senior Party sources believe that Packie Bonner, who saved the fifth penalty against Romania in Italia '90, can win support for the party in the North-West. Although former Senator Pascal Mooney, Senator Mark MacSharry and former ICMSA boss Pat O'Rourke all want to run with sitting MEP Sean O'Neachtain, the second FF candidacy is Packie Bonner's for the taking, party sources have said. Jim Higgins' Fine Gael seat looks safe but independent Marian Harkin could face Libertas' Declan Ganley at the polls on June 5th. Spring Exhibitions Donegal artist Ann Quinn has an exhibition of paintings entitled 'Different Silences' opening on the 5th of March at 5.30pm in the Ashford Gallery, RHA, Dublin. You can preview the exhibition on the artist's website: Ann Quinn.ie. The paintings in the exhibition have been shortlisted for the Golden Fleece Award. The Exhibition continues until March 26th, 2009. The work of world renowned wildlife photographer Steve Bloom is on view at the Man Made Images Gallery, Mountcharles until May 17th. Ian Gordon's exhibition 'Taobh le mo Bhroideireacht Churtha - Beside my Buried Embroidery' is continuing at An Gailearaí, Falcarragh until March 21st, 2009. Letterkenny has a new art gallery which is based above McGarrigles shoe shop on main street. The Conrad Gallery deals in oil paintings, watercolurs, drawings and sculptures by established and local artists. See Conrad Gallery. Inishowen Artists have launched a new website to inform the public of various events and exhibitions in the Peninsula. Inishowen artist Josephine Kelly is currently showing at the Clotworthy Arts Centre, Antrim. Cavanacor artist Eamon O'Kane is currently exhibiting 'Plans for The Past and The Future' at Bridewell Island, Nelson Street, Bristol. 'Plans for The Past and The Future' is the fifth part of a touring exhibition by Eamon O’Kane, gathered under the banner of CASE HISTORIES. This penultimate project at Plan 9 looks at architecture and history. The gallery will become a furniture workshop/studio where the artist will work with local carpenters to construct a replica set of tables and chairs from the 1600s, identical to those used by King James II that were situated under a sycamore tree in the garden of O’Kane’s parents’ house in Ireland. The furniture will be made out of the tree itself, which was hit by lightning in 1999. A limited edition artist’s book will be available for the duration of the exhibition, a fictional novel based on the history of the O’Kane’s house written by the artist between 1996-1998 which will be re-edited for this stage of the exhibition. See Plan 9. An artistic collaboration between Letterkenny natives Michele Gallen and Geraldine Galligan entitled 'Hello Ted' will open at An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny on March 7th, 2009. The abstract spiritual and emotional nature of the art manifests itself through Michele’s paintings and Geraldine’s poetry. See Michelle's paintings at Hello Ted. ![]() Recreational Diving, Dive Training and Angling throughout the year in Donegal Buncrana's Waste Problem Buncrana Colr. Rena Donaghey recently told council officials that 'the population of Buncrana and its environs is more than 9,000, yet is only served by the same recylcing facilities as Fahan, Burnfoot, Clonmany and other small villages. This is totally unacceptable'. 'We have been told for the last two years that two business people in Buncrana are interested in setting up a Civic Amenity Site in the town, yet I still haven’t been able to get answers when I ask what is going on. No one seems to know who they are, where the sites are or when it is going to happen. Colr Donaghey asked the council for a 'full and concise report' to be furnished at next month’s meeting of the Inishowen Electoral Area Committee, so that 'the people of Buncrana can know what is happening.' Fellow Buncrana Councillor, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, has said that deferment of Waste Management Payments will cause hardship for 1400 Donegal farming families. The Sinn Féin's EU election candidate for the North West Constituency, has again appealed to Minister for Agriculture, Brendan Smith, that payments due to farmers under the Waste Management Scheme are paid in full this year or in the absence of immediate funding, that all additional loan interest charges on the affected farmers is covered by Government. Donegal IFA have revealed that 1400 farming families are affected with €35 million at stake. Cllr Mac Lochlainn said: '1400 farming families across Donegal and thousands more across the state have shocked by the announcement by Minister Brendan Smith that payments due to them under the Waste Management Scheme are not to be made available in full this year. Rural communities will see where the government's priorities lie - the Government is willing to bail out the banks at a cost of €7 billion yet are deferring this crucial payment to farmers'. 'It is simply not acceptable to encourage people to spend money under a scheme such as this and then defer payment. This decision will leave many farmers in dire circumstances as most have already spent the money due to them. This move will also have a knock on effect on the rural economy as farmers will struggle to pay their bills. Farmers organisations have even warned that this deferment could result in bankruptcy for some farmers'. ![]() Find your Holiday Accommodation in Donegal Scéal na Teorann DoubleBand Films are producing a four-part bilingual documentary series for BBC NI & TG4 entitled Scéal na Teorann (The Story of the Border). Post 9/11 Security affects Ferry Senator Cecilia Keaveney has been informed by Northern Irelans' First Minister, Peter Robinson, and Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, that the 9/11 attacks in America are partly to blame for new security checks on the Magilligan-Greencastle ferry crossing. The security measures on the ferry crossing began as a result of a European Directive following the terror attacks on the United States. Senator Keaveney claims the measures are threatening the ferry service's survival as the searches add over half an hour to the embarcation. 'Surely a European Union that provides monies for 'Peace and Reconciliation' should aspire to success, such as is found specifically and quantifiably in the Foyle Ferry project?' Senator Keaveney revealed she had raised the matter through NI Minister for Employment, Tony McNulty, who has family links with Ballyshannon and Secretary of State for Scotland, John Murphy, whose mother hails from Ballybofey. Meanwhile, the North’s Regional Development Minister said his Department would not be funding the ferry when its contract runs out this coming June. The Lough Foyle Ferry Company used to receive an annual subsidy but that has now run out and NI Minister Conor Murphy said the continuation of the subsidy was not possible because the ferry ran between two jurisdictions and also government budgets were so tight. Mr. Murphy was speaking in the Northern Assembly meeting in Stormont after East Derry MLA, John Dallat, urged both governments to reconsider their positions. Shell to Sea This year Shell will again try to lay the off-shore section of the gas pipeline which involves building a compound at the beach head in Glengad and then laying the pipe at sea. A new boat has already arrived into Killala and houses there are being prepared to accommodate Shell’s Glengad Security Force, so work on the Shell pipline is expected to start soon. Last year the majority of the opposition occurred on the sea, however, this year, campaigners hope that there will also be more land based opposition and that people will begin coming to the area to protest from March onwards. Within Ireland the Rossport campaigners want to do more speaking tours to highlight the issues and inform people of the current situation. So helping them to host and organise talks in your area would be great. People curious about the campaign are more than welcome to stay at the camp. Find directions here. There are jobs for everyone to do at the camp. Contact the camp if you have any questions. During the winter many court cases have been proceeding against those who objected locally, for a variety of charges, from traffic offences, public order breaches to Garda assaults. There are still many more Shell to Sea cases to come before the courts. The current situation with the local groups is that Pobal Cill Comhain has backed the Gas to Glinsk (a remote onshore location in Mayo) proposal while Shell to Sea did not. While this proposal created tension at the time both locally and in the wider campaign, these tensions have largely been resolved over time. Both groups are united in their opposition to the Corrib Gas project as currently proposed and are working together to realise that. |

Tourism Numbers down in Donegal The strength of the euro has drawn tourists away from Co Donegal and the rest of the north-west region of the Republic into the north according to Fáilte Ireland. The tourist body has admitted visitor numbers fell across the region last year and that it faces a 'challenging' 2009. Martina Bromley, general manager of Failte Ireland North West, said she was still confident that Co Donegal's tourism industry could weather the currency fluctuations and the economic downturn. She said the region still had much to offer tourists and new projects - such as a Christian heritage trail incorporating Lough Derg and Rossnowlagh Friary - could attract many visitors. 'We will ensure that the north west is prominent in Failte Ireland's aggressive pursuit of the home market and will particularly try to exploit the north west's strategic tourism locations, beautiful scenery and good value to promote it as the ideal spot for home holidays this year,' she said. 'We will work with the industry through the current challenges but equally we will continue to invest in the fundamentals and infrastructure of tourism in the north west so that the region will be ideally positioned when the economic recovery does occur.' ![]() The Donegal Woman by John Throne A 'Must Read' for everyone with an interest in Donegal and it's History Turf-Cutting DVD for Charity A Carndonagh charity DVD showing traditional turf-cutting skills in the hills of Inishowen has sold out twice and is now into its third edition with all the proceeds from sales going to the Alzheimer's Unit in Carndonagh Hospital. Members of the McFarland family - Larry, Gerry, Niall and Leo - joined forces with Joseph McElhinney and Harry McDaid to produce this authentic record of an ancient craft for future generations. The film follows the entire process of preparing turf, from 'paring', which is removing the sod above the bank, to cutting, footing and bringing the turf back to keep the home fires burning during the long winter months. Those who've braved the bog in fine weather and foul over the years will no doubt appreciate this tribute to the hard work of our ancestors and generations past. The DVD shows exactly, in every detail, how turf was cut in 1964, from the bikes the men rode out to the bog, to their peaked caps and wellington boots to the old kettle used to make tea on a turf fire in the bog. If you would like to purchase the DVD call Larry McFarland on (00353) 086 894 8241 or email The McFarlands.
