Unemployed numbers rise in Donegal
County Donegal retains the title of the worst unemployment figures in Ireland. There are currently 10,352 people on the unemployment register in Donegal, the highest number in over a decade and nearly 400 more than in the month of February.
The number of unemployed in the County has increased by 22% per cent in the last two years with the County having a higher unemployment rate than the whole of Counties Sligo, Leitrim, Monaghan and Cavan put together, even though these counties population is 42% per cent higher than County Donegal.
The number of people unemployed is in direct relation to rising poverty levels in Donegal as witnessed by charities such as St. Vincent de Paul. People who find themselves in difficulties should contact the Money Advice and Budgeting Service in Letterkenny (MABS).
Cllr Pádraig Mac Lochlainn is calling for Donegal to be designated as an area of ‘specific economic need’ to avail of urgent investment and fast tracked strategic initiatives.

Pharmacy Dispute
90% per cent of the pharmacies in Donegal have written to the Health Service Executive stating their intention to withdraw from their contracts with the HSE as of May 1st. Responding to the news Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has written to Minister Mary Harney requesting that the Department of Health intervene immediately to facilitate talks between IPU and the HSE with six weeks to resolve the issue.
If this dispute cannot be averted then it is essential that contingency plans are set in place that minimise the implications for patients who need their medication. The HSE must guarantee the continued supply of medication with qualified staff.
The Irish Pharmacy Union north West representative feels that pharmacies simply cannot take the proposed 30% cut in payment from the HSE. ”The HSE have acted in a unilateral bullying and slaughtering approach and the 30% reduction is something pharmacists cannot cope with. Each pharmacist acts individually and it is not a united front but I expect the number to go up in Donegal. The HSE are aware that the current framework is the cheapest and most efficient for patient care and they are refusing to talk and engage the union where the matter could be quickly resolved.”He advises concerned patients to contact their pharmacist about the private only basis which they will operate from May 1st if a resolution is not found. The HSE help line is 1850 241850.

Lisbon referendum should be on weekend
Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson, Senator Pearse Doherty, has called on the Government to re-think its proposal to have the Lisbon Treaty referendum on June 12th. Senator Doherty said the referendum should be held on a Saturday in order to facilitate students and workers living away from home to travel home to vote.
Senator Doherty said, “Mid-week polling days are not suitable for the many thousands of students and workers living away from home. I am calling on the Taoiseach and the Government, in the name of democracy, to re-think the date for the Lisbon Treaty referendum. A Saturday polling day would be preferable and would ensure a much higher turnout.

Turf-Cutting DVD Launched for Charity
A Carndonagh charity DVD showing traditional turf-cutting skills in the hills of Inishowen has sold out twice and is now into its third edition with all the proceeds from the sale of the DVD going to the Alzheimer's Unit in Carndonagh Hospital.
Members of the McFarland family - Larry, Gerry, Niall and Leo - joined forces with Joseph McElhinney and Harry McDaid to produce this authentic record of an ancient craft for future generations.
The film follows the entire process of preparing turf, from 'paring', which is removing the sod above the bank, to cutting, footing and bringing the turf back to keep the home fires burning during the long winter months. Those who've braved the bog in fine weather and foul over the years will no doubt appreciate this tribute to the hard work of our ancestors and generations past.
The DVD shows exactly, in every detail, how turf was cut in 1964, from the bikes the men rode out to the bog, to their peaked caps and wellington boots to the old kettle used to make tea on a turf fire in the bog.
If you would like to purchase the DVD call Larry McFarland on (00353) 086 894 8241
or email The McFarlands. The DVD costs €12 euro plus €5 postage (Ireland and Europe) or $20 (including postage) to the United States.
