Golden Eagle Chick born in Donegal The first Golden Eagle born in Donegal for almost hundred years has been born in Glenveigh National Park. Golden Eagles last bred in Glenveagh in 1910 and the last Golden Eagle born in Ireland was shot in Mayo in 1912. This is a great achievement for the project to re-introduce the Golden Eagle back into Ireland. Adult eagles were reintroduced into Glenveagh National Park from Scotland in 2001. The breeding adults were collected as chicks, under licence from Scottish Natural Heritage, from the Highlands of Scotland. Golden Eagles can live up to 30 years and an adult bird has a wingspan of 190-225cm (6ft). Lorcan O'Toole, the project director, said bird enthusiasts and the general public should not come to the park looking for the nest as the eagle will not be able to fly until late July. There will be a further few months wait to see if the chick thrives and it should fledge in late July. One of the Scottish chicks fitted with a satellite tag in 2005 has been recorded in Donegal, Derry, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Leitrim, Sligo and Mayo. For further information see Golden Eagle.ie. General Election Results The General Election took place on May 24th. Fine Gael’s Joe McHugh topped the poll in Donegal North East; Fianna Fáil’s outgoing TD Cecilia Keaveney lost her seat while Dr Jim McDaid took the second seat for Fianna Fáil. Sinn Féin candidate Pádraig Mac Lochlainn narrowly missed gaining the third seat to Fianna Fáil’s Niall Blaney. In Donegal South West the outgoing TDs, Fine Gael's Dinny McGinley and Fianna Fáil's Mary Coughlan and Pat the Cope Gallagher, were re-elected. ![]() Turfstack & Mt Errigal by JJ Gallagher © New Photographic Website Gweebarra based photographer Johnny Gallagher has launched a new website of landscape photographs of Donegal. Proposed Donegal Private Hospital It is claimed that a 50-bed private hospital being proposed for Co. Donegal, would provide radiotherapy treatment for cancer sufferers who presently have to travel to Dublin for treatment. Private healthcare consortium Northwest Healthcare is planning to build the €60m facility adjacent to Letterkenny General Hospital. The new hospital would include facilities for renal dialysis, surgery, X-ray, CT, MRI and Pet scanners and a radiotherapy service, which could end the 6 and 7 hour bus journeys which cancer patients in Donegal have to make each week. However many are opposed to building a private hospital in publically funded grounds and argue that these facilities should be available in Letterkenny General Hospital. Volunteers Wanted The Inishowen Mens’ Helpline is looking for a volunteer. Anyone who would like to help out is asked to contact Margaret on 0749374529. Both men and women are encouraged to volunteer and training will be provided. Famine Memorial Park President Mary McAleese is to unveil a major Famine memorial park during an official visit to Canada on June 21st when she will open the 'Ireland Park' in Toronto. The Park is dedicated to the memory of 38,000 Irish people who fled to the city from Ireland during the Famine in 1847. The project is situated on the shores of Lake Ontario and includes sculptures and a giant wall of inscribed names. The sculptures were created by Dublin sculptor Rowan Gillespie, who is also responsible for the Famine Memorial on Custom House Quay in Dublin. Irish Ambassador to Canada, Declan Kelly will also attend and The Celtic Tenors are due to perform. Live music events are also planned around the opening of the Park including a performance by the 140-member Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. Irish emigrants who arrived in 1847 went on to play a major role in the growth and success of Toronto and Ireland Park is a celebration of this achievement and bears witness to the determination of a people to overcome adversity. Funds for the project were raised by many groups including the Ireland Fund of Canada. |

Mrs McCann was married to the late John McCann, originally from St Johnston, and she now lives in Glasgow. Their son Gerry and his wife Kate, were dining with friends some 100 yards away from their ground-floor apartment in Praia de Luz, Portugal and were checking on their children every 30 minutes. Madeline was last seen by her father Gerry at 9.15pm on May 3rd. When her mother Kate returned to check on their children at 10pm she discovered Madeleine was gone while the couple's two year-old twins Amelie and Sean lay sleeping. Portugese police sniffer dogs followed Madeleine's scent to a nearby supermarket before it was lost. The McCann family recently spent Easter in Dungloe. Malin Head for sale The owner of Banbas Crown at Malin Head, Ireland’s most northerly point, is putting the land up for sale. The land was owned by an English landlord Frank Harte who died intestate ten years ago and his daughter Georgina is now selling the famous landmark. Frank Harte wished that, after his death, any proceeds from the sale of the land would be given to a trust or individual who came up with the best idea on how to develop the land. In March, Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin sent a parliamentary question to the government saying Ireland’s most northerly point should be bought for the state. Sinn Féin Councillor Padraig MacLochlainn welcomed the news of the forthcoming sale and said he would propose, at the earliest opportunity, that either the State or the County Council buys the land. A building known locally as The Tower was built at Banba’s Crown by the British Admiralty in 1908. The land was later leased to British insurance giant Lloyds of London. During World War II, the Irish Department of Defence built lookout posts at the site. Flight of the Earls Musical Extra members are needed for The Flight Of The Earls Musical as soon as possible.
