Missing Child has Donegal Connections
Ellen McCann, (nee Ferry) originally from Burtonport, is the grandmother of the missing four-year-old girl, Madeleine McCann, who was snatched from her holiday apartment in Praia de Luz in the Algarve, Portugal on May 3rd.
Mrs McCann was married to the late John McCann, originally from St Johnston, and she now lives in Glasgow. Their son Gerry and his wife Kate, were dining with friends some 100 yards away from their ground-floor apartment in Praia de Luz, Portugal and were checking on their children every 30 minutes. Madeline was last seen by her father Gerry at 9.15pm on May 3rd. When her mother Kate returned to check on their children at 10pm she discovered Madeleine was gone while the couple's two year-old twins Amelie and Sean lay sleeping.
Portugese police sniffer dogs followed Madeleine's scent to a nearby supermarket before it was lost. The McCann family recently spent Easter in Dungloe.
Anyone with information should contact Crimestoppers on tel. 0044 1883 731 336 or the nearest police station. Note that Madeleine's pupil meets her iris on her right eye.

Guest of the Nation
Ronan Gallagher from Leitrim made his film 'Guest of The Nation' on a budget of only €100 euro. The film was shot on a Canon XL1 and edited on an Apple computer using Final Cut Pro.
It stars Nigerian actor and writer Eugene Ebhonuaye who fled sectarianism and racism in his own country to end up in Ballinamore in Ireland with his Ukrainian wife Irene.
The film highlights the plight of many asylum seekers in Ireland who have been traumatised and tormented in their own countries and whose lives in Ireland are restricted by their not being allowed to work while they await official recognition as refugees. Licences granted for Donegal
MAOR, the Donegal campaign group set up to raise awareness of the drilling activity off the coastline will be visiting Inishowen and Killybegs in the coming weeks.
MAOR say that four licences negotiated by the government will allow multi-national companies to control Donegal's natural resources and they have launched a public campaign to open consultation and raise awareness of the drilling activity off the county coastline.
MAOR are seeking to change government policy for the benefit of all. The voluntary group are not seeking to hinder or delay any progress but are hoping to ensure that the local economy will benefit from our natural resources.
One exploration area is off the coast of Gweedore, one is marked for Portnoo, one in Killybegs and a forth in the Ballyshannon coastal area. The recent extension of the continental shelf by Marine Minister Noel Dempsey which expands the exploration area by 200 nautical miles is also a cause for concern.
In a recent statement MAOR outlined a number of concerns: "Firstly, under current government policy, this means that rights to any oil and gas discovered will be granted to private companies. There will be no financial gain for the people of Ireland. Secondly, this increase in exploration rights will potentially lead to further developments like the project in Bellanaboy in County Mayo. Increased developments will lead to increasing pollution and in particular rising levels of CO2 emissions.

Bronze Age rock art on Inishowen hillside
Archaeologists have discovered two ancient ringforts with Bronze Age rock art near Bawnloge Hill at Tullydush outside Buncrana. One of the ringforts is medieval, dating from between the sixth and tenth centuries.
Paddy O’Donovan, archaeologist with the Archaeological Survey of the Dept. of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, said: “These sites are of considerable archaeological interest. The rock art is the most important find. It’s a rare monument type comprising a profusion of shallow ‘cup’ marks and linear grooves on the exposed upper face of the flat-topped erratic. This type of rock art is quite rare and is likely to date to the Bronze Age from 2000 BC to 500BC".
The first ringfort is 25 metres in diameter, has two small huts inside and a low circular mound in the centre.
Mr O’Donovan said: “The mound is possibly a third hut site. This is almost certainly a ringfort or ‘fairy fort’, a defended farmstead dating from the medieval period. Its location, in mountainous terrain, is very unusual.”
It is on a plateau on the northwest slope of the hill with commanding views of Lough Swilly. It is 378 metres above sea level.
The second structure is a D-shaped enclosure to the south of the hilltop which is “almost certainly a ringfort”. Mr O’Donovan said: “I believe that this, like the vast majority of ringforts, was originally circular but that one half was destroyed as a consequence of the construction of a roadway.”
Also found are a number of booley huts. These were constructed by impoverished farmers, who, during the summer months took their cattle to graze on mountainous or boglands which had no claimants. In some instances they were used to house a single member of the family; in others an entire family. The size of the hut reflects how many people it was to house. In many instances the builders chose a different location to construct their huts, usually constructed of sods and turf, each year. Others were more permanent structures.
