10,000 at Cancer Care Rally
Donegal Action for Cancer Care were delighted that up to 10,000 marched in Letterkenny on May 14th to heighten awareness on the impending loss of cancer care services in Donegal.
The event’s organisers want equal access to cancer care services and treatment in Donegal. Ms Lynn McDevitt, co-chair, DACC, said 'This is not a political rally - we just want to let the people of Donegal know what will happen if we lose our cancer services. We need a permanent breast cancer surgeon in Letterkenny. We don’t even have Breast Check in Donegal. It’s a disgrace and not fair to women. Everyone has a wife, mother, daughter or sister. This affects every family'.
The ‘awareness rally’ took place before a meeting of the Health Service Executive in Dublin when it is expected that a decision on the retention of the breast cancer surgeon at Letterkenny General Hospital is to be made. DACC are also campaigning for the immediate appointment of a radiation oncologist to Letterkenny General Hospital and the development of a satellite radiotherapy clinic in Letterkenny.

Rossport in Donegal?
There is concern that a Rossport type situation could arise in Donegal after the announcement that planning permission is being sought by Grianan Energy Ltd to build a gas powered electricity generating plant in the picturesque harbour of Burtonport providing that the company win the exploration licences off the Donegal coast.
Five applicants, including Shell and Statoil, have applied for the licenses off Donegal and the Dept. of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources is to make its decision by June.
Residents in and around Burtonport and on Arranmore Island are worried by the prospect of their environment being subject to the same risks outlined by the residents of Rossport, Co. Mayo, five of whom were gaoled last year for 94 days for refusing to allow Shell to put pipelines under their lands and close to houses.
The Minister, Noel Dempsey, established the Corrib Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to investigate safety issues in Mayo last August and this week it made know its findings, stating that it believes that 'proper consideration' was given to safety and that the pipeline will be constructed to an appropriate standard. However Campaigners against the Shell operation are unenthusiastic about the findings in the report, claiming that they fail to address the vital issue of the proximity of the pipeline to people's houses.
Dr Mark Garavan, spokesperson for the Shell to Sea Campaign, said that the report was 'almost entirely irrelevant' as the terms of reference covering it gave it so narrow a brief that it had to conclude that the pipeline was safe. Dr Garavan said that the primary concerns that people have are about the placing of a production pipeline through a village and in close proximity to peoples' houses and the consequences of an accident'.
Over the course of six years the views and concerns of the Mayo people have never been taken into account by the Government or by the Shell and Statoil corporations and people in West Donegal and its offshore islands now face the same prospect, regardless of who wins the licenses to exploit the seas around our coast.
Pearse Doherty of Donegal Sinn Féin is objecting to the granting of licenses: 'I find it quite remarkable that this government has sought and accepted five applications for oil and gas exploration off the Donegal coast in which the highly flawed 1992 licensing terms for offshore oil and gas exploration and development will apply. The 1992 Gas exploration legislation represents an extremely bad deal for the Irish People. The deal gives no royalties to the government and an extraordinarily low rate of tax, all of which can be written off. At the time of this legislation it is reported that former Minster Ray Burke, against the advice of senior officials in his department, held a meeting on his own with the oil companies after which the terms and conditions previously attached to licenses were changed dramatically in favour of the companies.'

Orange Halls in need of Repair
THE Orange Order wants the Irish Government to provide more than €1 million to refurbish 11 Orange halls in County Donegal.
This follows a meeting at Aras an Uachtarán between President Mary McAleese and Dr. Martin MacAleese with Orange Order leaders from the border counties. Among the issues discussed were the Aughrim battle site, the Battle of the Boyne site and funding for Orange community groups and halls in the Republic.
The County Grand Master in Donegal, Mr David Mahon, was at the meeting and made a call for funding for the Donegal Orange halls, some of which are up to 100 years old and are in a bad state.
Mr Mahon said that in the changing political climate he felt the time was right to approach the Government for funding for Halls in South Donegal whereas Orange Halls in East Donegal have managed to secure funding through cross border initiatives such as the Peace and Reconciliation Fund if they open their buildings for wider community use.
