Ballyshannon, the Town that Ireland forgot?
This is a crucial time in the history of Ballyshannon, 'the town that Ireland forgot', as new efforts are under way to plot a course for its future, embracing community facilities, housing, environment, culture and heritage, economy, tourism, town centre, transport and movement.
Entitled 'A Vision for Ballyshannon', a new local area plan is inviting submissions from individuals and organisations describing their vision for the future of the town. The new Local Area Plan will cover a six year period from 2003-2008.
The future of Ballyshannon will be determined by one overriding issue, the need for a new route for the proposed by-pass road. For this the local council and county council must take ultimate responsibility, paying attention to the strong opposition of the people whose lives will be impacted the most.
Anyone seeking further information on the subject may find it in an article 'Ballyshannon at the Crossroads' which appears in The Vindicator, the Canadian based website owned by former Donegal Vindicator editor, John Ward. The e-mail address for submissions to be forwarded regarding 'A Vision for Ballyshannon' is Donegal County Council.

Fintown Train Project de-railed?
The restoration of the narrow gauge railway along Lough Finn has been halted due to the disbandment of the Government Fás programme (community employment) which employed the workers on the Project and EU safety directives which the Project cannot afford to impliment.
It is hoped that local agencies will come to the Project's rescue as it would be a terrible waste if the work of the last 15 years were to be abandoned and the grass to grow on the line once more. The rail line along the lake was officially reopened in June, 1995 - 100 years after it first opened, and plans for a railway museum, cafe and boating facilities have yet to be realised.

Procrastination Irks Residents
Twice delayed already, Bord Pleanala's decision on the route of the proposed Ballyshannon by-pass, has been postponed again. Originally anticipated to be made public at Easter, the decision was put back until the holding of the General Election on May 18th. A further delay has since been announced. The repeated delays have irked local groups and individuals who made submissions calling for a re-routing of the proposed by-pass.
The Chairman of the Ballyshannon Town Council, Mr. Pat O'Malley, who is also spokesperson for CRASH (Concerned Residents Against Super Highway), has stated: 'We are concerned about the delay. Either they are going to give permission to go ahead or they are not. Or is there some other thing happening in the background that we don't actually know about?'

Donegal Residents Oppose Windfarms
Gerd Hona and Veronika Holscher, the German couple who are attempting to plant a pine forest near Dunlewy (See Donegal on the Net News Vol.3 No.9 April, 2002), are provoking further local anger with their application (Planning Ref 02/2637) to Donegal County Council for a three-turbine windfarm at Meendernasloe (Culacrick), Annagry. The proposed development is centered between the villages of Annagry, Crolly & Loughanure and the community are objecting on the grounds that the development contravenes the Donegal Development Plan 2000 which clearly states that no windfarm will be permitted within 500m of any dwelling house. There are at least six houses within 500m and three houses as close as 250m from the turbines. The community also fears that this is but the first of such applications and that the ESB infastructure would have to be augmented, causing further damage to the landscape and health. A community objection as well as several individual objections are being lodged to D.C.C.

Donegal Ladies GAA Victory
The Donegal New York women have won the championship and the men's team are on track to do the same following a busy July that saw the men's Junior team win two matches and the Seniors one.
In only their third year of play the Donegal Ladies GAA team captured the Peter Connaughton Cup with a convincing but hard fought eight point win over Rockland. The cross-river foes never gave up the battle and a four point Donegal half-time lead could not be taken as secure. At the end of time, led by Player of the Game Mary Casey, their 2-13 to 2-5 win was a just victory for the young team.
Scorers for Donegal were Mags Dineen 0-4, Amanda Lennon 0-4, Amanda Casey 1-1, Celine Dingler 1-0, Aisling Whelan 0-3, Mary Ambrose 0-1. Donegal goaltender Tina Dingler was announced as co-winner of the LGAA June Player of the Month Award.
