Patrick McGinley was born in
Glencolumcille in 1937.
He was educated at University College, Galway and taught in Ireland before moving
to London where he began writing and publishing in the 1970's. Patrick McGinley has
published 8 novels, including Bogmail (1978) which was serialised for television
and nominated for the Edgar Allan Poe Best Novel award in
1982 while Goosefoot (1983) was made into a feature film entitled 'The Fantasist',
directed by Robin Hardy in 1986. Several of McGinley's novels, including The Trick of the Ga Bolga (1985) are set in Donegal and owe much of their dry wit and dark plots to the local condition. A more recent work, The Lost Soldier’s Song (1994) is set during the Irish War of Independence. © Rugadh Patrick McGinley i nGleann Cholmcille i 1937. Fuair sé a chuid oideachais í gColaiste na hOllscoile, Gaillimh agus bhí sé seal ag múineadh in Éirinn sulár aistrigh se go Londain - áit ar thosaigh sé ag scríobh agus ag foilsiú sna 1970aí. D'fhoilsigh Patrick McGinley ocht úrscéal, ar a raibh Bogmail (1978), a bhí mar sraithscéal ar an teilifís agus a h-ainmíodh do Edgar Allan Poe Best Novel Award i 1982. Comh maith le sin rinneadh scannán den scéal Goosefoot (1983) den teideal "The Fantasist" agus ba é Robin Hardy a bhí mar stiúrthóir ar seo i 1986. Tá roinnt de chuid úrscéalta McGinley - The Trick of the Ga Bolga sa aireamh - bunaithe i Dún na nGall agus is léir go bhfuil an deisbhealaí agus an uisce faoi thalamh atá le fail sna scéalta seo mar is dual do spioraid na condae. Saothar úrnua den chuid - The Lost Soldier's Song - tá sé lonnaithe in aimsir Chogadh Na Saoirse.© |
