Donegal band Altan are one of the most popular bands making traditional Irish music today. In 1988 Altan released their debut album *Altan* and over the next ten years they released six albums including *Horse with a Heart*; *The Red Crow*; *Harvest Storm*; and *Island Angel*.
Their CD, Another Sky, has topped the American Billboard Charts and their previous CDs *Blackwater* and Runaway Sunday have each topped the Irish Hot Press Folk Chart, the British Roots Chart and the American Billboard World Music Chart. Both albums have each sold over 100,000 copies with the group collecting two Gold Discs and two Hot Press Roots Music Awards.
Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, Altan's lead singer, is recognised as one of the finest exponents of the Donegal fiddle style. She was taught by her father Francie and the renowned Donegal fiddler Dinny McLaughlin. The other members of the group are Ciaran Tourish (fiddle, tin whistle) who hails from Buncrana; Dermot Byrne (button accordion, melodeon) from Teileann; Ciaran Curran (bouzouki, guitar) from Kinawley; Mark Kelly (guitar, vocals) from Dublin and Derry born Dáithí Sproule (guitar, vocals) who joins the band on their tours of the United States where Sproule is based in Minnesota.
